Istanbul is divided into three parts by the Bosphorus strait, the estuary of the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara. Sultanahmet, the old city, is home to most of the major tourist attractions and is brimming over with little tales from Ottoman history. Taksim, Beyoglu and Galata are all at the center of modern Istanbul in Europe, while Kadikoy is located in the Asian side, also known as the Anatolian side. The water channels are an integral part of life in Istanbul, and there are bridges built all over the city for the convenience of commuters. Spend a day just admiring the magnificence of the Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofia). This basilica turned mosque turned museum tops the list in all Turkey Vacation packages. But, this is one of those places that you just can't 'tick off' your list. It is to be experienced, and for that you need to spend time. The Byzantine mosaics uncovered after several years can be seen at the gallery. If watch the Aya Sofia as you sip thick, sweet Turkish coffee at one of the cafes at Sarayburnu, you won't want to get up and leave. Within walking distance, in the same neighborhood of Sultanahmet are the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. Saunter the opulent courtyards of the Topkapi Palace, which was a jewel in the Ottoman rulers' crown. The Blue Mosque, which gets its name owing to the blue tiles that deck the interior, is home to Sultanahmet's tomb. Visit earlier in the mornings so that you can escape the thronging crowds. Visit a Turkish hamam and enjoy a traditional Turkish bath and massage. After a thoroughly invigorating experience, you can head out to Istiklal Street which has some great cafes. This young, vibrant side of Istanbul with its fashionably dressed men and women is always bustling with activity, and you can people-watch while you sip your tea. For a fabulous sunset, the place to be would be Galata Bridge. If you don't try the local cuisine, you haven't really experienced a place. So indulge in a couple of delicious kebabs and bite into some extremely sweet baklava at one of the local eateries. For retail therapy, and a superb visual treat, your stop would be the Grand Bazaar. With over 3000 shops selling carpets, lanterns, clothes, Turkish ceramics, and various souvenirs, you're spoilt for choice. Haggling is the name of the game here, and the locals do love bargaining hard. Stock up on some spices to take back home, when you visit the Spice Bazaar. Turkey packages often include a cruise on the Bosphorus, and it's something you cannot miss. Watching the gulls swoop down on fish as you sail down the channel dividing two markedly different parts of the city allows you to experience Istanbul in a way you can't from land. Istanbul overwhelms a traveler with the treasure chest of experiences it has to offer, and it takes a long time to even scrape the surface. So take a bite of Turkish delight, sip some coffee and set out to explore Istanbul.
