Nickel is useful in this regard since it can be used over a range of different applications and places and materials. Nickel has the following qualities: as noted before, preventing corrosion, and also the fact that nickel is good with lubrication and has the ability to control hardness and absorption. Nickel plating kits used by the at-home plater can be either electrolytic (electricity based) or electroless, meaning the kit will operate without the use of electricity. Electrolytic plating with nickel can be done over many different conductive materials including brass, copper, silver and bronze. Nickel plating finishes can be done over many types of surfaces. Nickel can be plated electrically with an anode and cathode wired connection and condensed onto an object. It can be added to a surface as either hard or soft, bright or dull. Its hardness can be found in-between a certain Vickers count usually 150-500. When done the way the nickel will appear can be one of two ways, a very dull type grey color or a very bright and close to white look. Electroplated coatings of nickel can have a large range and as a plater becomes better and more familiar with the process they will be able to adjust the final outcome of the nickel plate. Nickel plating done with an electroless kit is a process that is autocatalytic. This means that no electrodeposition is employed, or, in other words, no electrical current exists in this process. When nickel is plated this way it's known for a very uniform type of final product. There are no light or thin spots where clamps or clips are typically used in the electroplating process and so overall coverage is the same throughout. In the electroless procedure plating density is much more even and plating thickness is controlled by adjusting the time of immersion in the solution bath. Between these two types of plating, there are good options for adhering nickel onto any conductive material that a kit owner wants to plate.
